Street style and city character

The abundance of life and character within the urban environment is something that continues to excite me as a photographer; the streets can provide many different examples of genres that will, no doubt, improve and enhance your portfolio. With a little exploration and curiosity, you may also surprise yourself by creating a unique set. Often favouring the minimalistic approach, I find the 18-70mm lens is typically the best for versatility and provides freedom to roam with no limitations around the city scene. Street photography allows you to compose a story. Being part of the hustle and bustle, it can help you think about personal impressions - which then provides the pieces to form together the final work produced. During winter, being resourceful with limited light whilst adapting to seasonal changes can be tricky, along with the unpredictable weather patterns that can be rather interruptive - it may be worth investing in a decent lens hood to avoid the constant cleansing of glass during a shoot...

Reading about other photographers and architects is something that can help inspire and mould your body of work and shape your style. Recently I've been revisiting the works of Berenice Abbott and Berthold Lubetkin - both of whom are highly respected pioneers of their craft and still inspire a new generation to this very day. I think it's important to view and appreciate other artists' work and take note of their techniques that are a particular interest to you - it can be hugely beneficial during each photo mission going forward...
